Overview

Waruga are ancient above-ground stone sarcophagi found in North Sulawesi, especially in the Minahasa region, dating back to around the 8th century. Traditionally used by nobles, these carved burial chambers reflect early Minahasan beliefs in ancestor worship and the afterlife. Although their use declined with the spread of Christianity, Waruga remain an important cultural symbol and a testament to the region’s rich heritage.
